Interfaith Council Blasts RI Works (GoLocalProv)

“The program, as enacted five years ago is not living up to what it is
supposed to do,” said Linda Katz, J.D., Cofounder and Policy Director of
the Economic Progress Institute formerly the Poverty Institute). “The
bottom line is that this program is supposed to act as a safety net for
the most vulnerable. It’s supposed to assist in avoiding homelessness
and hunger. If fails in doing so.”

Bills aim to save taxpayers money (Providence Journal)

Rachel
Flum, of the Economic Progress Institute, said there is already a

Benefits will be hit by sequester (Providence Journal)

     At
the Economic Progress Institute, which advocates for policies affecting
the poor and low income, Executive Director Kate Brewster said such
cuts –– which equal $184 a month for an unemployed resident –– are
“quite significant...And
it’s not only going to be harmful to unemployed Rhode Island
households, who will find it much more difficult to make ends meet,”
Brewster said, “but it will also surely be a drag on our struggling
economy.”

Jobs credit halves taxes paid by CVS (Providence Journal)

It would be really unfortunate for CVS to reconsider its commitment to Rhode Island, given the tax relief they’ve been given to date,” said Kate Brewster, executive director of the Economic Progress Institute, which advocates for policies affecting the poor and low income. “Lawmakers at this point have to decide whether they want to do something for many, or something for a very few.”
